Resources For Safe Havens
The Save Abandoned Babies Foundation is grateful for the hard work and dedication of the police, fire, hospital and emergency personnel who have helped save the lives of more than 150 newborns.
Because personnel of Safe Havens serve a crucial role in the safe relinquishment of abandoned infants it is important for all employees to understand the protocols that need to be followed to be in compliance with the Abandoned Infant Newborn Protection Act.
If you are a staff person at a Safe Haven there are three things to know:
- Be knowledgeable about the Safe Haven Law. Information about the law can be found here.
- Make sure your Safe Haven location has a sign that is clearly placed for a relinquishing parent to see.
- Have an Information Packet available for the newborn’s mother to take with her. The information packet can be found here.
If you ever have a newborn relinquished to you, know that the parent can remain anonymous and be kind to them. Ask them if they need medical care or wish to communicate any information. Safely relinquishing a newborn shows courage and compassion and we are grateful to parents who chose this option during a difficult time.
After the child has been relinquished to you and is safe, contact Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) at 800-252-2873 (24-hours). DCFS will take custody of the child an ensure they receive medical care as well as get placed with a registered adoption agency.
The law provides that every hospital, fire station, emergency medical facility, and police station must post a sign in a conspicuous place on the exterior of the building informing persons that a newborn infant may be relinquished at the facility.
